Metal prices

Post by kennye »

Has anyone had a big increase in metal prices ?We normally use 4 x 8 16 gauge sheets for metal art work
When trump took over it was 85.00 a sheet it dropped down to 47.00 a sheet and now Im paying 130.00 a sheet for the same metal
Would like to have some input on why its has gone out of sight if its changed for you or its just in my area S.C.I cant figure. THANKS

Just send a thank you card to the White House, steel is not the only thing going up.

16ga is $80/sheet here, but there isn't any available. I tried to order a couple of sheets last week and they didn't have any.

I buy 16ga in 5x10 sheets. It's at $2.63 sq. ft. or $131.50 per sheet. A year ago I was paying about $88 for the same sheet.

It's supply and demand. Demand is way up, supply is way down. This is economics, not politics.

I think greed has more to do with it than economics.

It's simple supply and demand! Basic Econ 101. Same with lumber fuel, food, etc.

off topic + politics (I am in the UK so I'm curious but cannot be bothered about the strange political divides in the US)

Obama seemed to be open market, trump came along and pulled up the draw bridge and slapped heavy tariffs on Chinese imports (steel amongst them) Biden has been in a few months.

one would expect that steel prices would have gone up when trump restricted dumping of cheap Chinese steel (and imports).... with Obama and Biden would the prices not go down because I presume lots of the trade barriers that trump put in to support the local market and stop cheaper imports ...

or is it because the economy is picking up post covid and supply cannot keep up with demand because Biden has not removed the restrictions that trump put in place.... which means it's better for us suppliers of steel just not consumers... but at least the money is staying in the country and not being lost to imports / trade deficit.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/steel- ... 021-05-19/

seems like us steel suppliers are campaigning for the tariffs to remain... I wonder why..... $$$$ .... people only campaign against something when it doesn't work in their best interests...

It doesnt matter which country. Here in Bavaria we have neither Wood or Metal. And If you can purchase some, its goddamn expensive.
