Weathering steel slag accumulation

Post by Andrewbcdueck »

HI I cut all my fire rings out of 3/16 weathering steel, I saw on one conversation that there are different qualities of weathering steel, some cut good and some do not. In the attached picture you will see that I cut each triangle at a different feed rate and they all had the same amount of nasty slag on the back. This was at 80 amps with an 80 amp tip, I finally was able to get it under control by running 100 amps through a 80 amp tip, and then the majority of the slag just needed a wire grinder brush to get rid of it. Any tips on this?

what happens if you reduce the feedrate by 10-20% ?

You have what appears to be low speed slag. There are two types of slag caused by speed, high speed and low speed. Low speed slag will typically be rough built up slag that is easily removed. High speed slag will generally be finer, hardened, and much harder to remove. If all other settings are correct try increasing your cut speed in small increments until you get clean, consistent cuts. You should also measure your cut height to be sure you are cutting at the correct height.

Well that is what I did, I started at 40 or 45 ipm and went up until it didn't pierce anymore around 70-75 and all the way it was poor.

It very well could be the steel I am not sure but I am with mdwalker in regards to it looking like low speed slag.

I realize that you sped it up until it just wouldn't cut through anymore but other factors could be affecting this situation also and throwing you off.

What plasma cutter are you using?
