Magnetic Break-Away Machine Torch Mount

Post by The-Meerkat »

Crashed and broke my mount today. I’m thinking of going with a Magnetic Break-Away mount. Doing some Google searching, I see store bought ones ranging from $150 to $500. The top end one has safety cables so the torch doesn’t fall into the water below and has a switch that triggers E-stop when the magnets disconnect. I want all that. Short of spending a half-Grand or building one myself, anybody have thoughts on these things either good or bad? Recommendations?

SeanP has a very good easy to make breakaway design on this forum. I would search for it.

I designed one in Bobcad this week and 3D printed it while waiting for N52 magnets to arrive. The magnets came in and I glued them into place last night and covered the ones that can be seen with 3D printed plugs. I’m going to add a safety strap. Before installing, I’m also adding a couple micro limit switches to stop the machine if the two pieces come apart.

Mine is very similar to Rodw I might rebuild it a bit cleaner down the road if i can get my hands on a mill.i made a quick and simple magnet mount works great so far and cost me less than $15. Works great with the one 98 lb. magnet. Could use 2 maybe if your machine is real fast. The spring loaded detents work perfect for lining up. they click into the screw holes on the bearing

there are more than you think from the DIY group Here is a neat on by a member here Xnaron.. It is neat as the torch stays captive if knocked off by a collision. :Like

Maybe The Meerkat could post the STL file for those the want to try it.
