James A. Davis 04/24/1951 - 05/07/2020

Post by james.davis »

For those of you who knew my Dad you probably appreciated all the hours he spent converting to .dxf, .pcm, sketching out hard projects, working through drops and optimizing for the least slag. He created to better the world, and truly only wanted to help people. To my knowledge he never sold a single sketch or conversion and instead shared them freely on this site.

He was known to have a portfolio of metal art for any situation, frequently giving pieces to all of his family, especially his grand kids, friends, charity, and other good people. Even his wife was shocked when Sammy Hager called the house to thank Dad for an infinity mirror portal he had created for one of Sammy’s restaurants. Dad gave it to him free.

He truly had a passion for designing and creating with his hands, be it art, tool, or playset. If it didn’t exist he simply made it.

My Dad spent countless hours on this site building people up and encouraging them. Helping out the newbies and veterans alike. Even if he didn’t say it in so many words, he truly enjoyed your company.

Jim was proud of his service to his country recounting many stories of his days in the Coast Guard. He was an accomplished sailor, earning designation as a Coast Guard Cutterman, and receiving the Arctic Service Award and Golden Shellback honors for his time aboard the Coast Guard IceBreaker USCGC Glacier (AGB-4). Jim spent many years as a Journeyman Boilermaker as well as a Journey Steamfitter locally for the VA Hospital, McChord Airforce Base, Todd's ShipYards, and Simpson Kraft.

He brought his sense of humor and lightheartedness everywhere he went. When he told stories his genuine delivery brought about laughter and evoked the imagination. He gave freely of himself and would always lend a hand, share advice, or just listen if you needed someone to talk to. In his final hours Jim spoke only to ease the minds of the ones he loved. On May 7th Dad told his sons “You know there’s nothing to worry about. God is watching over me, either way it’s going to work out. I’m so fortunate to have a great family and grandchildren in life. My life has truly been blessed.” That night he would enter God’s welcoming hands.

Jim Davis was an artist, engineer, and an accomplished tradesman but most of all he was a wonderful father, fellow adventurer to his wife, Papa to his eight grand children, and an amazing human being. I am proud to be his son!

Thank you to those that gave my Dad a community for one of his passions!

Sincerely,
James M. Davis

I'm deeply saddened to see this news. At least now I know why my last email to him went unanswered. Your father and I worked several projects together over the years combining our efforts to give his clients the highest quality work possible. He was always a pleasure to deal with, a true gentleman and I'll miss him dearly. I offer my heartfelt condolences to your family and pray for your comfort and strength.

I did not know your Dad but if he shared files on this forum, I'm sure I have some. We apparently connect on many levels, Fellow Washingtonian (Tacoma), Coast Guardsmen, metal work and file sharing. I am truly saddened. Please accept my sincere condolences to your whole family. Russ K.
