Electromagnetic chuck

Post by spoolnms »

So am looking into making an electromagnetic chuck to hold down the material as I flap disk/sand it. Been doing a bunch of research and was wondering if anyones made one and could give a few pointers.

Was looking into electromagnets/door magnets (https://www.amazon.com/Control-Electric ... s=1&sr=8-6)

Using a flat stock for the magnet to stick too, would the work piece stick well enough to that flat piece of metal to hold it in place while flap disking?

Depending on how big a piece you want to hold in place, how strong your magnet would need to be. Or you could make a table with more than one, all connected to one power source.

Basically for small stuff, max Id hold with it is like a 12x12ish or so. Anything larger, ill clamp down.

I've been wanting to make one also. I've tried one using microwave transformers, and have heard of them using auto AC compressor clutches, and driveway sweepers, but not this one. Seems like it might be a cheap switchable option. Keep us informed on your progress.

Will do. Ordered a 600lb magnet, and will build a setup within the next few days and will post back.

Ordered one more magnet, will be here tomorrow, but these two work great as is! Cant go wrong with more clamping power though!

P.S. This is prototype numero uno lol

Got any pics of the finished project?
How do you like it and how are you powering it?
Can you stick a small 3"-ish piece of steel to it, and grind on it without it flying across the room?

+1
Interested in knowing how this is holding up under use
Looks like a better /easier solution than playing around with microwave transformers, resin and milling to finish
