Magnetic Chuck for grinding

Post by ColoradoWayne »

Is anyone using a magnetic chuck for hand grinding? It seems like it should hold material really well? I am curious to learn how people are using these magnets.

I am thinking just to hold down metal while using a regular hand grinder. I just don't hear, or see, many folks using them and think there may be a good reason not to use them?

Magnetic chucks can be hard to find or they cost to much when you do find one. I bought a few rare earth magnets that were 1/4" thick and 3/4" square. I just put some down on my metal top bench in the configuration I need for whatever I am cleaning up and grind away. works great.

That is what I was hoping to hear. Do you put the magnets under the table to hold your work piece? That is what I am hoping to be able to do. Less expensive magnetic chucks (under $100) are available on ebay with several hundred pounds of pulling pressure.

I bought a cheap one off of eBay and built a table for it to sit down in so the top is flush and that is one of the many best ideas I have gotten off of this forum. After I done that I realized just how much dust I was breathing because I started doing all of my grinding in one spot.

This is something like I bought. I know its probably not the strongest one out there but I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I also saw the idea of the magnetic chuck for grinding here on the forum several years ago and built one into my grinding table soon after. The increase in production alone more than pays for the cost of a chuck in short order. Grinding makes the most dust in my shop, so I plan to build a vented grinding table next and it will have one or more magnetic chucks built into it. The chuck holds large items well, but really is outstanding for holding several smaller items at a time. I have gotten many good ideas from the forum but this is one of the best.

Any chance you guys, blackandtan and Healeyfishing, can share a picture of how you did your table and mounted your magnet? There is very little on here about these and you two certainly proclaim these as truly beneficial. I hadn't thought of the additional value of it grabbing the dust too.

So, how do you go about cleaning off the magnetic dust from grinding?

These magnets have an on and off switch, I am assuming you turn it off and just wipe it down. Hopefully those that are using them can share their experience. I think I will order one today and see how it works out. I would like my magnet to be contained so it doesn't get dirty. I am hopeful you can put the magnet under the table and it is strong enough to clamp the material through the metal table top.

I would be surprised if it would hold through the table top. Here is how I done mine.

Thanks, I hope I can get it to work through the top, but if not I will do the same thing you did.

I just got a magnetic chuck table top put together. Only sanded one piece and it made a huge difference. Both hands on the grinder, no clamps to hit, and a lot of the dust just stuck to the magnet. Just turn the magnet off and wipe the table top down. Using a fine pole magnet it appears there can be nothing between the magnet and the work piece. I don't know what would happen with a coarse or normal pole magnet? So far I am quite pleased with this experiment.

Here is my red neck magnetic chuck. 4 magnetic tool bars, available at most hardware stores, bolted back to back. Stick them down any where on your work bench for small or large work pieces. I stick them on the end of my lathe when not in use. Also shown is my angle grinder with my favorite wire cup brush. Makes short work of dross on the backside of cutouts. I almost never use a grinding wheel on work thanks to my PM 65 plasma cutter and candcnc electronics. Same wire brush cleans magnets off when needed.

So I am assuming only the top is magnetized when on?? or will it hold to a metal welding bench when turned on?

Only the magnet itself has magnetic pull, not the whole table. Yes, only the top is magnetic. This only works well on thin material, the magnet has very short magnetic reach. I've been using for almost a year now and it has truly made my work much easier.

This reminded me of the DIY electromagnet topic by Scrtach viewtopic.php?f=85&p=173030

Still gotta do this sometime myself but I thinks its genius for anyone wanting a magnetic grind table.
