Air Compressor Oil Weight for cold weather?

Post by john527 »

My compressor is in a unheated pole barn in Michigan, I noticed it starts up somewhat slow when cold, should I put a lighter weight oil in it like maybe 20 wt? just wondering if anybody else has this problem?

If your running a straight 30w try going to a 5w30 synthetic motor oil. I just use Mobil 1 synthetic and compressor starts easy in the cold. My shop would be a little warmer than a pole barn but this should help.

I use one of these Wolverine heaters with a thermal cube. They make different sizes and wattages for your application/location.

It doesn't get too cold here in central NM, but I have a cheap and simple "Auto Zone" engine block heater mounted right on the crank case.

I know this is an old post, but I am looking at this same compressor, how has it worked for you? Is this the reed or disc valve version? Have you had any problems with it?
