For those who don't have a magnetic breakaway yet but do have a floating head for touch off, you could add a second microswitch on the floating head.

I installed one and have it activate just 1mm above the touch off microswitch. It's wired into the estop circuit. It has shut down my system on numerous occasions when for whatever reason the torch touched the metal when it was not supposed to.

It won't be as protective as a breakaway. For instance, purely sideways pressure will not lift the floating head, but it's better than no safeguard at all.

I also look at my cut paths and try to never have the torch pass over a part that has already been cut. That includes a part it has just finished, e.g. the lead in/out is on the left of the part and after the cut is done the torch moves to the right, crossing over the part. Next thing is have your safe Z quite high so immediately after a lead out the torch raises quite high before rapiding to the next position.

Sheetcam sticks a "go back to zero" command at the end of my gcode. I always delete that so at the end of the cut the torch raises to safe z and doesn't go anywhere. One day I'll modify the post processor so it doesn't put that command there.

If you have the Feather Touch the Z swtich should be wire for ESTOP NOT a limit because limits are ignore if you are doing a REF (homing move) and the ohmic sensor misses

Only time I have needed a break away is when I try to fit parts in where I shouldn't and don't ck the parameters of the cuts on the material cause of distractions or simple carelessness on my part. Have done that twice over the past 7 yrs.

Last time being two nights ago :roll: Need two new pces for the duramax I just hooked up :roll:

Need a do not disturb sign up when I'm cutting!! :mrgreen:

So I looked more closely at the torch with the damaged sleeve removed. It makes sense now. Thanks Steve

Here's an illustration. Hope it helps someone else too.

My question Is for a additional Micro switch; (Breakaway) wired in place of the Feather touch jumper, so If the breakaway releases will the limit shut it down accordingly?

that is the best advice. i too edit my start starts to where the torch heads away from any possible tip up.

i looked at the post for the last 0,0 command. i don't see it, you may need to edit g-code for ever :mrgreen:
there's a lot of magic in those post processors, way beyond my level of intelligence
if i'm doing a repeat cut, i edit g-code to move off the material for reloading material

I'm sure I modified a post processor a long time ago but with changing PCs etc that one "vanished". Normally I just ask Les or one of the other lads and they just tell me where to look in the post processor and what to change, I don't really know the Lua programming. I generally always have a glance through the gcode after I've generated the tap file, just to check there's no obvious problems. Feels like I've already been deleting that last line forever though :D

I have a candcnc DTHC II and when it stops with e-stop, the motors are still on and im not loosing any steps.
i just replace torch, hit reset, then continue cutting where it stopped.

I added a switch to my breakaway and will wire it to the estop.

Very nice. We have a burntable. They sell the torch holders for ~$35. They are not truly break-away, so I re-designed the holder for magnets. I've been through three final printed iterations and finally found one where the mag force is right. The switch is next. Very good ideas.

To delete the go to home command at the end of the job:
Click:
Options---> machine--->post processor
at the bottom, click edit post, it will open a new window.
Scroll down until you find something like this:

function OnFinish()
finalCut = true
endZ = safeZ
OnRapid()
endX = 0
endY = 0
offX = 0
offY = 0
offZ = 0
OnRapid()
post.Text(" S900 \n")
post.Text(" M22 \n")
post.Text(thcOffCode)
post.Text(" (DTHC is off)\n");
post.Text(" M22 \n")
post.Text (" M05 M30\n")

And delete the ones i have put in red
I reccomend saving under a different name, so you can always revert back to your original post.

Can't upload the files. The forum doesn't take STL's. It gets fixed, I'll put 'em up. I have no plans on marketing.

So if I understand this correctly, what you are doing is triggering a feed hold, vs an estop, in Mach? That way you don't lose position? The downside being that the torch wouldn't be shut off. Although I guess that could be triggered as well?

Check out www.plasmatorchprotectionsystem.com . we have been using there unit for a number of years on a Torchmate CNC it has saved our machine torch many times, never damaged a machine torch yet after literally thousands of hours use .

WHY NOT USE A COLLISION SENSOR MOUNTED BEHIND THE TORCH TO IMMEDIATELY STOP THE TORCH HEAD AND PREVENT ANY DAMAGE OR LOSS TO THE TORCH

Depends on how you have the FT-01 wired . The LIMIT jumper on the FT-01 has been changed to E-Stop function IF you have the mechanical swtich setup NC and assigned to the e-stop string. inserting the Breakaway sensor into the string then becomes easy by just pulling the jumper on the FT-01 and making it part of the E-stop circuit . Has to be wired on the normally open of the switch if its designed to be activated when the plate is in place and opens when it breaks away.
