Has anyone built a Smoker

Post by sportfreak15 »

Working on building a Reverse Flow Pig smoker, Figured I would use .12ms as I have piles of scrap. Thought it would be worth asking the question to see if someone has a design that works well... Thanks

Yes. Check out http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/ and look under the welding section. There are all kinds of calculators there to tell you how big the firebox needs to be vs the size of the cooking chamber, how big the intakes need to be for the size of the firebox, how big the opening between the fire box and the cooking chamber needs to be and how big the exhaust needs to be, so it all draws correctly once you get a fire lit. All of these are things that I had never considered, but apparently there are smoker nerds just like there are plasma nerds and they sit around with a slide rule and a cold beer and figure all this stuff out. I used it when I built mine, and I use them on all the ones I make now, and they all cook like a champ. Draw great, easy to control the fire (some smokers they are either roaring or they go out) etc. I never knew why some were duds and some were great, but I think some of this explains some of that. Anyways, check it out nice folks on the forum over there.

Wow, thanks a lot Shane... I never considered any of these things. Glad I asked the question. Would have likely ended up with a large lawn ornament...

Thats all I really do with my plasma cutter. Use Feldons BBQ Pit Calculator to help figure out volumes and stuff. You start with the cook chamber for the calcs

We just finished one for a customer. We used a 1000 gallon NH3 tank. 27cf insulated fire box, 10" chimney about 8' tall.

Here is mine. Shane is right about the Smoke Ring site. A lot of useful info there.
I have added some more stuff since this pic. I'll see if I can find an up to date
pic. It is reverse flow with PID temp control.
