You want to BUILD a plate roller instead of buying one that is already engineered and designed to handle a certain level of material? I am all for taking on projects, but I would rather buy one than build one.

This is dxf files and plans for a 36 inch plate roller for using cnc plasma or laser.
"YOU WILL NEED TO FIND SOME 3.5 INCH SCHEDUAL 40 PIPE IT WILL BE 4 INCHES IN DIAMETER OR FIND SOME 4 INCH TUBE AT LEAST CLOSE TO 1/4 THICK''.
You will need a cad program to make some spacers that need to be very close to fit into the pipe.
It will roll 9 inches of 1/4 inch and wider of thinner material.
all the parts are listed with links and all the materials.
you will need a welder that can weld 1/4 inch steel.
A drill press or drill that can drill a 1.5 hole in aluminum 1.5 inches deep.
Some parts like the acme nut/coupling and the 2.5 solid aluminum can be found cheaper on ebay but they keep changing the listing so I put some links that shouldnt go away from companies.

It would be cheaper to find a metal fab shop in your area that already has a plate roller with that capacity and negotiate a price to roll your firepits for you. A machine capable of doing what you want to do is many thousands of dollars.

Do you want flat blanks rolled, to cut out designs from after they are rolled, or do you want to cut the art out of the flat panels and then roll them? Where are you located?

It is possible to roll 1/8" plate 24" wide using smaller rollers if you HEAT the metal during the rolling process. There is no law that says plate must be rolled STONE COLD. A bank of rosebud torch heads that the metal will pass over (or under) as the plate is rolled will allow smaller rollers to roll thicker and wider plates. It would most likely need to be a homemade roller, with a bank of acetylene rosebuds that would soften the metal before it passes through the rollers. Of course heave gloves would be used to handle the finished piece!

If you are doing a bunch of them and just need the blanks rolled, then it may very well be worth you time to take that 3 hr. drive. If you've got the funds there are most likely ready built models (new or used) available as well.
