So my question is, if the gear has 20 teeth, and the rack is 6.35 teeth per inch, how do you get one inch of lateral movement out of one full rotation of the gear?

Joe

20 Tooth 1/4 inch bore Spur Gear, pinion gear to go with the 6.35 tooth per inch rack we sell as rack-and-pinion drive mechanism for your CNC machine. Ex[c]ellent for plasma machines and router machines. Or use these to make your on gear mechanism.

Bore 1/4"
Pitch=6.35
Pressure angle 20 degree
Number of teeth = 20
Pitch diameter = 3/4"
Gear width .375
hub width .375 two 4mm set screws
Total width through the bore .750
OD = 7/8

Ummm ... If the motor pulley is 14 teeth, and the larger pulley is 36 teeth, it is not a 3:1 ratio, which would be 14:42, not 14:36

If the 42-tooth pulley is rotating the 20 tooth gear on the gear rack, and the pitch of the gear rack is 6.35 teeth per inch, then the carriage is moving farther than one inch per rotation of that gear.

I am trying to understand what you have here, but your numbers do not add up.

Joe

Tom - thanks for that information. It is always good to learn about new sources for parts.

Joe I am not the one to worry about some details, I have built 7 tables using this same setup, and they work great. I cannot tell you how many tables were built using my plans, but I'm sure there are many. You asked for the info, I am not tell you that you must use it. :HaHa :HaHa

I am SURE your tables work. I am just trying to make sense of the photo that claims one rotation of the gear that engages the gear rack moves the carriage one lateral inch. I have no doubt that your machines are working great.
