New person

Post by Batchain puller »

Hey kids, I'm new here and just saying hey. I've built myself a diy plasma CNC rig running GRBL through an Arduino. I use a Vipercut 301 and whenever I look up issues I have it sends me her so I figured I better jump in. Thanks for having me.

Welcome aboard! I built a small cnc routing/engraving/plasma cutting table several years ago running with GRBL/Ardiuno and it works great. Lots of fun! Show us some pictures of your setup, and some of the projects you are making with it. I was using Candle for communication with the Arduino and Fusion 360 for cad/cam. What are you using?

That's handy that you've got in mounted in that suitcase style enclosure. Keeps it protected and easy to move around.

I'm having trouble posting more pics. It says "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. Please verify that the URL you entered is correct." If you check on Dac Vu's channel on YouTube, you can see what I built. I bought the plans from him.

Did you buy his kit of build from scratch using his plans? I think this looks very interesting.

I bought the plans and a partial kit. He didn't have any full kits available at the time. I think I got the x and y axis, the legs and the motor mounts. It has it's limitations but it is portable and it cuts smaller thing just fine. I am in the process dialing everything in so it's a work in progress still.

I clicked on your link and it says Google will send me an invitation to view your photos or video. You can go to Google drive and use the "share, copy link (anyone can see it) to get a link that will open directly to post here. That will make it much easier for folks to see your share.

Those work fine. Thanks for sharing your photos and video. It looks like it works very well, and would be a nice tool to have for portable use.

Batchain that will get you started, I used my first table to be able to develop and cut DXF files for the newer table parts. For you understanding direct drive steppers do not allow you to get the precision cutting you could have with about a 3:1 ratio. You are still a great leap ahead over hand cutting. I am not trying to rain on your parade.
Have fun

How does one get a 3:1 ratio exactly?

gears or pulley/belt combo. Or maybe a small gear box/stack.

Here is my "Y" drive assembly Small motor pulley, larger on the auxiliary shaft to drive gear. basically motor turns 3 times to shaft 1 turn.

Build update. The bottom rail developed a sag. I made an adjustable support and that helped the sag but I realized that that rail flexed too much and caused me sag as the other rail extended. I found a stout piece of steel 2.5 inches wide by 2 inches thick. I'm going to weld the v rails and rack gear to this steel as soon as I finish prepping the new legs.

What is the pitch of your gear rack? You say the gear rotates at "One Turn Per Inch." How many teeth on the small motor belt cog, and on the larger aluminum belt wheel? What is the ration? 1: 4? 1:5? Then it turns the metal gear that looks like it has 24 teeth. How are you getting only one inch of lateral movement out of that gear per rotation?

The rack is a 20 tooth per inch and the spur gear has 20 teeth, I will get the sprockets teeth info in the morning

That would put the pitch at .050" or 1.27mm. The gear is evidently a lot smaller than it looks in the photo.
