3-D Printed Floating Head assembly

Post by acourtjester » Wed Jul 14, 2021 4:16 pm

I needed a floating head torch holder, and for some reason the normal supplier would not communicate about an order I placed for hardened "V" rail.
So I drew up and printed a different one for the table. This uses 8 MM hardened shafts and linear bearings and is shaped for a machine torch. I like to keep the torch mounts far apart for better support ( no wobble cause by the cable movement). Attached are images of the parts and in its finished location. Printing files are free for the asking, switch, shaft, and bearings can be bought on eBay or from 3-D printer parts vendor.

Wow! Wow! and Wow! Now that is awesome. How long does it takes to print a set of parts like that?

The Printed parts run about 3.5 to 4.5 hours each, with the printer I have, some may be quicker. :HaHa

That's a great job there Tom! Well done, been using auto transmission fluid on linear bearings for last few months, works really well and easier to clean than any grease.

Thanks for the replies, laying in bed this morning I started to think of a mod for combining a magnetic break away into this design. I will post any changes when I make them.

Nice build and yes you need the mag break away, The main torch body on a Hypertherm machine torch is $100+, You can buy a lot of filament for that price. You might want to mount some laser sockets on it as well.

Thanks! I already got the two top/bottom rail holders printed, working on the torch holders now.

The scale surprised me, any idea how long those rails were in the video or the above pix?

Edit: just ordered 300mm rods I'll figure out what works on my setup.

The rails are hardened so you will need to cut them with a cutoff wheel
