Guitar End Plates

Post by Joe Jones »

They still need a bit of work and I am going to laser etch the DOBRO LOGO into some of them.

Me too. I am new to this. I will not use the X-Tool laser. But the Galvo laser should etch the steel nicely. I have to cut some test plates of the same material, so I can screw THOSE up until I find the correct settings. I have only burned a couple of anodized business card blanks to test the laser, but I know there is a lot more to this. Learning was easier, 40 years ago. :Sad

I had a small tabletop C02 laser years ago and found anodized aluminum very easy to get good results. Steel not so much. Bought this spray on stuff called Thermark that you spray on the steel and the laser is supposed to get awesome results on steel with that but that never worked either. Not enough wattage I think.

This is a steel guitar end plate I made for a 100-year-old guitar. I cut the steel on the cnc plasma table, and used my 30 watt fiber laser to etch the harp onto the raw steel. I was amazed to see it come out black with nothing used to prep the surface.

Then I bent the plate on my finger brake and I made a template for the raised hump for the guitar strings. I used my 20-ton hydraulic press to form the hump for the strings.

I made five different designs. Steve chose this one for the guitar.

Here is the laser etching the logo. Nothing was done to the steel. It just turned jet black on its own.
