GUITAR END PLATE

Post by Joe Jones »

I was asked to reproduce a guitar end plate for an old DOBRO acoustic guitar. This is the first attempt, but I made it a bit too long. :Sad So I will make it again, and to the correct length. also, I am going to experiment with my laser to engrave the DOBRO HARP and LOGO into the metal, to give it some pizazz. The original metal was quite thin, but the new piece will be 14 gauge. The guy wants something that doesn't bend quite so easily. He wants it to appear "old" so I think I will clean it and let it rust a bit, before sealing it with clear coat.

I figured out a way to create the curved hump for the strings, using a 20 TON hydraulic press. I was actually surprised at how well that came out!

Nice work!! Can see a little roll at the brake on the left side, A hand brake or press brake (with correct bottom die and top punch, would match the same radius of the original. Very close..

I used eight 1/8" x 1/2" x 4" strips of steel flat bar, a 3/8" bolt and two steel plates with a 20 ton bottle jack press. :HaHa

That explains the larger radius on the flange. The thicker material would have a larger radius. The rule of thumb is 8 times metal thickness on a bottom die, so a 1” open on the bottom die would be die of choice per book for that brake (bend). Looks good

Doug - that is something I did not know. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks. I actually have to make another one, but shorter. Apparently, the length is important to get the harmonic vibration of the strings directly over the hole. The one I made was okay, but I made the mistake of scaling the WIDTH, but actually scaling the entire thing. So it became too long.

I will design it again, shorter, and I am going to laser etch the DOBRO logo into the metal, and maybe play with a couple of other designs as well.

I think they are very marketable. Maybe even a custom version that can be personalized?

I don't even know if DOBRO guitar Company still exists. I am making ONE for a friend of a friend, and then I will move on.
