First Attempt PUGGY

Post by Joe Jones »

I brought the photo into my iPad and basically drew in the black regions in a layer above the photo using VECTOR Q. I imported the result into DesignEdge as a .jpg image and let the software trace it. Then just a bit of clean up.

Opinions?

Thank you. The dog is sort of fuzzy with thick fur, so I didn't want crisp clean lines around the profile. I am going to cut it out to see what it looks like full size.

I guess I will get better with practice. It is difficult, when you have a dog for example, that has four different colors of fur. You want to depict the dog's exterior presence correctly, but with metal, you only have TWO crayons :Sad ... METAL and AIR.

Of course, layered plaques can address color variations and such, but I have seen some beautiful metal art of dogs and cats, and cows and horses, etc., and I marvel at the artist's ability to create what is essentially a black and white halftone image from a color .jpg image. I find it difficult to decide what is included, and what is omitted.

I struggle with the same thing, some guys seem to have an eye for what to leave and what to omit to achieve a great design. I don't practice enough because it really isn't a skill I need for what I do but I sure wish I could do it.

You should check out Vector Q. If is a free app for Ipads and is really easy to use, and does most of the hard work for you. I use it quite a bit for just such applications - it also has a great node editing tool. Dave Hanks is the first one I knew using it, and I can thank him for putting me onto it.

I will check that one out David. I have tried Imaengine app for ipad...have you tried that one? If so did you find Vector Q does a better job?

It is the same program under a different name. IMAENGINE was the earlier version. VECTOR Q has more features, and it is still FREE!

I have used both, and I find that the new version (Vector Q) has more tools, is a bit easier to use, and produces better results for me personally.

Dave introduced the Imaengine program to me when I drove down to his home to do some software training and to work in his table. He runs circles around me with what he produces. I guess he still has the motivation that I lack.

His home is filled with fantastic metal art pieces. I encouraged him to open a vendor booth somewhere, and begin to sell these pieces, but I think he does it just for fun. Still, there is a LOT of potential income hanging on those walls.

Imaengine has now become VECTOR Q, and you are correct, that it is more powerful and a bit easier to use. I am only dipping my toes into the program. I haven't taken the time to delve deeply into its capabilities. I certainly do see the potential though. I liked Imaengine's ability to automatically stitch closed paths together to make one close path, but I have not found THAT function in Vector Q yet. That was a REAL timesaver for me.
