Trestle Table

Post by bhamer62 »

Seen one of these on here some years ago, finally had the opportunity to make one for the conference room at work.
3/8" plate for most parts
3x5x5/16w tubing
1" plate for arched trestle
Hammered rivets from King Architectural
2" thick Cherry wood
Heat and oil rub finish

WOW, that is amazing! Very nice job. How did you get that uniform color and finish on the steel plate and rivets?

If you made the top larger and added shallow draws to the back it would make a great desk. :Yay :Like

Thanks all
Diesel, for the oil rubbed finish, you simply take a MAPP or Propane gas hand held torch and heat stuff up till it's just a lil too warm to hold on to, then use a crappy old paint brush and apply Bri Wax, https://briwax.com I like Tudor Brown. It liquifies, slather it on and let it go, all done....

acourtjester, It would indeed.... Planning on modifying the design a bit for coffee table legs and also sizing it up a bit for a live edge dining table. Now that I got to make one and see it, I can adjust things a bit for other uses.

Sego, no but they are from Ohio, it may be a relative...??? At our shop we have 8 Lasers with 5x10 with pallet changers, the newest one is a 12K fiber, 4 CNC brakes, 2 water jets, a tube laser, do some rolling and just got a new fiber laser welder..... I'm just a Project Manager that likes to play on the side and do my own thing. I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut.....lol

jester, gettin ready to start making some table legs designs, lots of people doing wood working these days with live edge and the only thing they can find is those hairpin legs and square tubular stuff......I'm thinking if I buy a $1200 slab a wood I would want some sexy legs under it...hoping to create an opportunity....

Some guys use the same process for larger items like smokers. They use a 5 gallon propane tank and a weed burner to heat up larger areas of metal and then rub boiled linseed oil on the surface to inhibit rust and add a nice finish. That stuff is pretty cheap too.. I get it at the "Homie Store" and keep a little on hand cause it also restores wood knife handles (no heat needed here) after the kids habitually dry them out in the dishwasher..

Awesome thanks for the info, I would have never stumbled onto that technique. Sounds nice and simple for such a cool appearance. One of the nicest project picture posts I have seen in a while :Like :Like

Thanks for the kind words, the Bri Wax technique doesn't like smooth or oily material as well as it likes rougher stuff, the nastier the material the better it works. I have used it alot on hand railings made from hammered pipe or forged stuff. No cleaning required.......
One important side note, do not hit the Bri wax can with a flame!!! Extremely flammable when it's wet!!!!! Your work will catch fire occasionally, just blow it out.......if you let the area dry you are working on before heating near it it usually won't lite up, only have to wait about 30 seconds. It is not as dangerous as it may sound if you are careful.....I still have all my eyebrows.....lol We have done hundreds of lineal feet of hand railing like this....

Very nice edge quality. Was this cut with laser, hi-def plasma, or regular plasma?
Thanks,

That 12k fiber laser gives super clean cuts - as it should considering it is a "top of the line" machine. Thanks for sharing the information.
