Dinosaur attack!

Post by 762frmafr »

Just finished up this T-Rex for an attention getter for the outside of my shop. It is cut from 1/4" mild steel. It measures approximately 50" tall and 86" long. I think it will get some looks. What do you think?

Yes, this size was 45" wide and I believe 70 something or 80 something inches long. I don't remember exactly. But it was as big as I could do in one sheet. In fact, the slots are a little loose just so I could get it a little bigger. But from all the 3D projects I have done so far, I like the slots on the loose side that way I can position the pieces exactly where I want them. I am thinking of doing one out of 1/2" but that one will take some re-arranging of the pieces. Hopefully will be able to get that one on 2 sheets.

Weld it to a base in the earth to prevent it from walking away cause there are folks out there that will help it move.

Have you been listening to "thoughts" . . .

I have been downloading T-Rex dxfs every time I see one . . .

I actually poured a spot in front of my shop for him . . . if it every gets the last inspection . . .lol lol lol

He looks great . . . and you can decorate him at Christmas time . . . .

Can you share which of the many files on the NET you used to cut him?

I will post the DXF tomorrow. I can also post the CDR file if that would be easier.

Thank you for the DXF offer . . . as soon as I am up and running that will be one of the first things I cut . . . .

Just curious, what do you think he weighs . . . :D

Take care,

Here is the DXF file as well as the CDR file. The CDR was made in X5 so I am not sure how it will work in older versions. The whole thing measures 45 inches by 81.25 inches. So just enough for one sheet.

I just messed around with the file real quick. Looks to me that one double the size will take up a little more than 3 4x8 sheets.

Thanks for the files.

Looks good but nothing to what it will with the right paint job. Should certainly catch peoples attention.

If a picture paints a thousand words, that paints a bit more.

OK guys, correct me if I am wrong, but couldn't you increase the size without increasing plate size by changing the slots?

Is he spot welded or is he a gravity fit puzzle like the wood puzzles?

Again, thank you very much for the DXF . . .

Yes, you could increase size and just change the slot size. But I think with this project, I would want to keep increasing plate size as there is a lot of weight being hung on the upper portion of the body and I feel it needs all the strength it can get.

Keep us posted on customer reactions. What % are oblivious to it and what normal :) customers stop to say "oooooooohh, that's awesome".

Bit of a different industry but I find a lot of customers in my excavation business very frustrating. I built a grab for my little excavator, so picking up concrete for instance (as well as big huge clumps of vegetation) is not just easier but often possible when it otherwise wouldn't be. I fill a bin in a fraction of the time and most customers don't bat an eyelid. I hope your experience is much more positive (and improves you bottom line of course).

Another way to help keep it from walking away without having to chain it down is to take a rod about 18" long and weld a flat plate to the bottom of it about 6" or so diameter. Bury the plate in the soil and weld the rod to the dinosaur's leg. The plate on the bottom of the steel rod prevents someone from pulling it out of the ground.
