Layered sign for a university

Post by bestmetalworks »

I finished this sign a couple weeks ago for a college here in North Georgia.

I welded studs to the top piece and attached it to the base by drilling holes and back welding them then grinding smooth.

I’m still trying to learn better ways to attach painted pieces together of different colors. Any suggestions are always welcome!

Welded studs on the back plate acted as anchors into the brick wall.

16ga steel was used for all layers with a 1/2” gap from front to back.

@Tnbndr
Yes, it being a state university, it's required by their marketing team and legal.

Acetone clean up. Acid etch primer. For the paint I had to color match to the school so I used a local paint shop to mix the enamel paint.

So those studs you welded on the back. Are they just stuck in drilled holes in the brick ? Did you use any type of Hilti anchor compound/epoxy for these studs to set into.

There were 9 studs in total 2-1/2” into the wall. I used anchoring epoxy on 3 of the holes just in case they want to move it. But this thing is pretty solid into the wall without the epoxy. My studs are threaded like I’m sure most guys on here are. They tend to bite well on their own.
