My Build

Post by ScottRa »

Well, after a lot of cutting and grinding, measuring, internal debate, building a temp jig and ta da, welding is complete on the primary structures.

The jig I welded up out of some flat for my slats. It let me measure and make punch marks to get square and distance, and then some small tabs let me line up the tube to weld the first set of legs. Then I built the next two laying them out on the first. Was a little less fussy that way. I sure could of used a fixture table. :Wow I think I spent over an hour getting my base level.

Thanks guys!

David, you mention heavy and I realized I had no idea what this weighs. All 3 x 3” 1/8”. With the 4 lower braces and the 2 top rail mounts (111”) added to these legs it comes to 306 lbs. The crossbars and longitudinal support for the pan and slats will add approx 110 lbs when I get them cut and built. I can probably still slide the basic structure around on a concrete floor but not for long. LOL I haven’t figured out what the slats for the pan weigh but unloading the material for them was a pain.

Not quite done welding the bottom, and the top rail supports are just sitting on there.

Thanks DF, working on getting the top supports trued up level and square today. I’m planning on strongly tacking at the corners of all the uprights checking that nothing gets out of kilter. Might be obsessive but I may temporary install the rails and bare gantry and insure that it runs true before I finish it off.

Progress for the day. Everything as close to level as the levels will give. Do have one that wasn’t quite plumb in the middle while the ends were spot on. Not sure if it’s a deformed area on the side or a twist in the tube. I’ll have to do some more examination to figure that out. More checking with the level and a string line should give some insight.

Hurrah....It’s gonna work! After a bunch of monkey business with my engine hoist cylinder and a pipe wrench, pipe and ratchet strap I got what I felt was close enough. Measuring across the top of the side plates got me 61 and 1/32” all the way except a couple at the end at 61”. I can see a gap on he very end so the tube may be a bit tweaked right there, I’ll probably fiddle with that some more later.

Thanks guys...getting paint on it and being able to move the gantry back and forth (even if by hand) was pretty satisfying!!!
