Gantry axis longer than X axis?

Gantry axis longer than X axis?

Have any of you all built a table with the gantry axis (Y) longer than the X axis? I am thinking the gantry width at 2500mm and the X axis at 2000mm.

What would be the disadvantages of this arrangement?

I could see if the gantry axis was quite long it would mean the gantry was heavier and therefor more difficult to move and stop.
