New Project Need Help-Sign

I am working on a sign for a customer and am having problems with the letters "O" and "R".
I have tried for 2 days to figure out how to make the center of the O and R stay with the outside. I want the letters to fall out and put a backer plate behind.

Any help would be appreciated.
