45XP Machine torch with Fine Cut Tips

Post by topkote »

What shield / deflector should I be using?

45XP cutting 14 gauge mild steel with a mechanical torch with #220854 retaining cap (NOT OHMIC)

With the fine-cut consumables using a 22930 nozzle, 220842 electrode, and a 220947 swirl ring what shield/ reflector should I use?

The 220948 or the 220955? Just using compressed air not gas.

Thanks Mike

I’d recommend always using a shielded process when using plasma on flat material so the 220948 would be and is my choice. Slightly better cut quality and longer consumable life should be the benefit.

Everyone's experience is different but I have had best success with the non-shielded 220955 deflector.

Should be no difference in cut quality whether you go shielded or unshielded with the deflector.

Consumable life is often improved using a shield when cutting thicker material since it protects the nozzle during the long pierce delay when molten metal is spraying up at the nozzle, but in thin material that pierces quickly its not an issue.

I find the 220955 deflector provides a great view of the arc and the cut which is otherwise hidden by the shield and also provides more room to clear tip ups, warp ups, and has the Finecut nozzle has a rounded nose which also helps with this.

Try both and let us know what you prefer.

I'm Okay using the 220995 I was just confused as to which one was supposed to go on there with the fine-cut tips. All I saw was the reference to the Ohmic retaining cap. Thank you for the help.

Just some additional reading on the topic with feedback from a very knowledgeable Hypertherm (now retired) guy:
