Yeah we are on the same page cstroke, tree trunk/roots. I'll post the dxf of the face. I haven't done up the legs quite yet. Keep in mind the drawing will need to be changed up (hour angle and gnomon angle) for your location.

First off thank you for the share, I cut this over the weekend and added some Patina. I also changed the degrees to match my town.

Re: Sundial
Looks like the guys from Lincoln at Design Cut Build did a sundial with a different type of base. Although it's pretty wasteful in my opinion, I still like it because it could give someone ideas.

Re: Sundial
I think it unreasonable that your wife gets mad if you are late home from the sacrifice. With the sun down how the heck are you supposed to keep track of the time? Sundial sort of leads you to think that any thing between sundown and sunup should be free unaccounted for time!

Re: Sundial
Another question.... do I kick it clock wise or counter clockwise to adjust for daylight savings?
Can someone enlighten me,,, any reason that a sundial could not be built to put on a wall? South exposure I presume!

Re: Sundial
Just build 2 and hang a sign on the gnomon that says out of order, then you can move it back and forth for DST or regular.sawdust1 wrote:Another question.... do I kick it clock wise or counter clockwise to adjust for daylight savings?

Re: Sundial
If you're serious you would turn it counter clockwise. I put mine together yesterday and was like dang it's an hour behind then I realized what was going on.sawdust1 wrote:Another question.... do I kick it clock wise or counter clockwise to adjust for daylight savings?

And yes it can go on a wall, even west facing but it doesn't work until like 11 o'clock. Google them

My son made a life size sun dial for Crystal Springs Preserve for his Eagle project. I could have used that link a few years ago... This one had to work as it is part of their educational exhibits. We couldn't take in account for the time change so it is an hour off in the spring. A kid stands on the compass rose and their shadow casts the time so I can certainly appreciate the work that went into it.Scratch wrote: ↑Sat May 15, 2010 5:32 pm
I actually put alot of work into this, I had no idea there's actually a "science" to these sundial thingys. This one's made for a latitude of 44.9747222 degrees. (my town of Hudson WI). If you want to make one for your town, google your towns latitude, then go here: http://www.sundials.uklinux.net/hd_calc.htm and enter it in. It'll tell you what angle to make all the time lines. The angle of the "gnomon" (that goofy lookin' thing that casts the shadow) is the same as the latitude so that's easy enough.
Even though I vowed to never do another sundial, i appreciate the share.
