Clearcoat on cold rolled help.

Post by gaolista »

We are having some problems with finger prints. We have acetoned the surface and used gloves for handling prior to and during spraying, and are getting some fingerprints showing up a week after clear coating. We are using a rattlecan (rustoleum-2x matte clear).
The weird part in all this is the finger prints aren't showing up until about a week later. We sprayed a few coats, then let them sit and they looked great. We took them out to take some pictures and didn't use gloves (we assumed 1week was enough drying time) and came back the next day and the fingerprints showed up. We assume it's on top and can't figure out what's going on.
Any ideas?? Any recommendations on a better solution than rattle cans that's easy to learn/use?
Thanks in advance

It would seem that the clear is not set up hard enough and the finger prints are embedding themselves in the clear coat. Are you letting cure at correct temp and humidity? Does the clear coat feel tacky or soft? An infrared light may help cure, set faster?
You should be able to sand with 600 and clear over again to make them disappear.

How soon after wiping down with the Acetone did you spray the clear?
I know the acetone will appear dry almost immediately, but if applied liberally maybe it didn't completely dry prior to spraying on clear.
And therefore causing clear to remain soft. (Off gassing under clear?)

Just my WAG

Sometimes I warm up the steel and go over it lightly with a propane torch to burn off the surface.

Did you find a solution to this problem? I have been plagued by the same issue.

I have had a lot of issues using that brand clear. I switched to ACE brand and it dries soooo quick!!! Also the spray nozzle gives a nice fan spray versus the spot spray, so it is much easier to get a good even coverage.
