I was very honored when the Battleship Iowa museum staff asked me to build a Kingfisher wing as part of a new Naval aviation exhibit but also a little nervous when they told me I had only a month. The exhibit also goes with the Piasecki HUP2 helicopter we just refurbished.

I really thought this would be relatively easy given I had already drawn the wing for this project:

Boy I could not have been more wrong. I gained a great respect for anyone who works with sheet metals.
The skin of the wing is 1100 aluminum it had the lowest ductile number I could find. Most of the wing is .06 thick but I, had to use .02 at the wing tips and it still was hard to work. In fact I nicked up my fingers so much my smartphone fingerprint reader does not recognize my index finger anymore and it forced me to register my pinkies.

Thanks, it's a little embarrassing but the Iowa museum staff decided my wing was not good enough and used the one in the pictures. I don't know about you but I think my wing looks much nicer, but I don't get to decide. CraigMadMetal2000 wrote:Way cool Craig, any picture of the installed?

The display is called Heavy Metal. It looks like the wing is wood with a picture glued to it. I agree, yours would have been much more authentic looking.

Surely their loss, the wing they ended up using does not resemble a wing at all whilst your's look like something from a real aircraft, some clients have got the weirdest ideas sometimes, they simply have no idea what the real product should look like and wanted a billboard instead of a wing
Thanks
Deon
