Lol @ pen and paper =)
When auto trace and other easier avenues fail the pen tool is my go to. I used to find it really hard to get my shapes smooth but practice makes perfect.

Yea...Ive been guilty of trace paper on top of my monitor. It actually works very well and fast when you are in a pinch. Just lay the screen down flat and trace away....a 5 year old can do it.
