Help with union

Post by taberahkj »

I'm having trouble with a drawing. I downloaded the standard lightswitch dxf from here and I'm trying to combine an image into it. I select both objects and click combine paths and then Union paths and the combine works but the Union is doing nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction? It's driving me crazy. Attached are the before and after screenshots. Basically I'm trying to get the Chickens tied into the switchplate with the extra lines removed.

I think if you select the base plate and one of the chickens at a time will work. Or Select a chicken and then another to union, the add another until you have all the chickens as a group then try a union of the group and the base plate. I don't think you can union over 2 separate things at one time.

Don't Combine them- that's where you're having issues- just select them all and then do a Union. I had a similar issue recently, and found that was the solution.

Do not combine them. Place them where you want them, select them with your edit by node tool and then click on union.. Works every time, as long as you have the drawing overlapped. I'm afraid you are going to have a problem with this file. The legs are way to small to cut.

Thanks for the help guys! I got it to work and scaled and edited the drawing to hopefully make it possible to cut. The only other issue I had was when I created the Union, it added an extra stroke around the switch plate that I had to delete. Here's the final product.

Now it will cut. I have a bad habit of trying to put way to much detail in my drawings so I'm always looking for things like that. Thanks for the share buddy.
