large self closing hooks

Post by Sawdustcreek »

Am looking for hooks of a self closing style, or drag to close for a log arch project. Rather than reinvent the wheel, if any body has a design they would like to share, it would be much appreciated..don

If the principle works all you have to do is scale them up to what size you need.

I think he is looking for something like this. Should be easy enough to draw one up.

Just chiming in with my thoughts on this. I haul a lot of logs (dragging them through brush, rocks, stump holes, etc...) My suggestion to you is to buy a set, and do not try to cut them out of regular steel. Most manufacturers of these choose cast or hardened hooks for a reason. Unless you are planning to cut them from one inch plate or thicker, they will just bend, twist and not be very effective. I would consider a sling chain or cable for larger logs. Hooks work great, don't get me wrong..... But a sling chain on a 3 point lift works great too. Not as quick as dropping a hook on them for sure, but easy to sling one if you use a cant hook. I wish you luck if you do decide to make one, please let us know how it works, I love to be corrected.... :)

Agree with you 100%. I have made several sets, but have used either 3/4" or 1" round stock, forged to shape and then tempered. I would not use one cut out of flat stock... unless it was just small logs or such.

What if a person were to cut some from AR500? Just curious.

I have never dealt wit AR500 myself, so I can't really say one way or the other. But I know it is pricey, so is it worth trying? Have to ask yourself on that one. I think I would still go with mine or Bobcat320's thoughts. Better safe than sorry.... Would hate for you to make the investment, both time and money, only to have it fail. Hou have to ask yourself one question though... If they could be made with a plasma cutter (and be effective), why has nobody else done it. It would be a far quicker fabrication process (and cheaper) than forging them, or casting them.... again, just food for thought.
However, with that said... It might be your flugelbinder, and make millions... never know until you try LOL

I have no intentions of making any but just curious. There's a local fab shop that builds guard towers and they have a considerable amount of AR500 scrap left over so I'd think that'd be pretty reasonable. In the past I've bought AR400 from them at a good price.

If it were me I'd just cut 2 sets out of 1/2 or 5'8 and then weld them together for a full inch of 1 1/4.
Maybe even weld a spacer in between to give a little more torsional stability.

I was thinking similar this morning only I was thinking either cut one finger heavy metal, other side two fingers lighter with welding or staggering the other fingers. If I were to do something like this I have a tendency to overbuild. But it sure helps with the stories/suggestions from experienced members. Kinda like image.

I had not considered doing it this way (been forging long before I had plasma cutter), but I think it would work if done right!
