bandsaw hard stop

Post by rikduk »

Hello,
I'm in the planning stages of building an ajustable hard stop for my bandsaw.
The stop would ride on bearings, and move with a ballscrew with a stepper motor, probably with a spinning nut (10 to 12 foot lenght rod).

I would like to have a small screen with keypad to enter the desired lenght, press enter, then the stop goes
to the desired location. (no, i dont feel like installing a computer with mach3 on my bandsaw)

Is there somewhere i can buy a "kit" with motor, drive, head unit , almost plug and play?

Thanks

Richard

You may look at some of the Arduino sites, I found a dividing head turned by a stepper controlled by an Arduino. I use it to cut gears on a milling machine you would need a different program to do what you want.

You could get a DRO with power feed, like the ones they use on bridgeport mills etc, I know you can buy the powerfeed for approx $300, not sure about the DRO I think they are in the $150 range.

Thanks guys for the help,
@ sphurley, i live in Quebec, California is a long way
@east german, while cool, a full cnc saw is too complicated for now.
@shane warnick, by power feed, you mean push the button till the dro reads the correct value? or is there a way to get it to the desired spot by itself?

thanks

Look up Tigerstop. I've seen them used for a good price. It will give you an idea of how.

yes, sphurley, its exactly the kind of system i want, but i want to make the mechanicals, because slamming a 400 pound piece of steel
might be too much for their system.
And at 3500 usd, its a little over budget for me.

You can do a pretty simple automatic bar feeder on a bandsaw with just a PLC like a Siemens Logo. My bandsaw has a automatic bar feeder and the whole set up is quite simple. It works basically like the one East German linked to on YouTube. The difference is mine is with hydraulic cylinders not leadscrews. Limit switches control the stroke. The two vices are hydraulic.

i guess i could use a plc to control the motor...is it hard to program?

The ones I use are programmable to be repeatable, so you can program "home" positions, etc. So when you finish working on a piece, you can tell it to take the x and y and z axis to a certain preprogrammed spot. It also has a sensor on it, with a quick detach clamp, that snaps onto the bar or allthread the dro rides along. When it gets there, it kicks the DRO out, and stops feeding.

I second the Arduino w/stepper motor to move the stop.

A small LCD screen to show the set distance.
2 - push buttons to increase/decrease in large steps.
2 - push buttons to increase/decrease in small steps.

Tons of info and examples of programming steppers out there, and parts are cheap.

Edit:
general parts list to Google/Ebay

Arduino Uno
1602 LCD Shield (LCD and push buttons)
Arduino Stepper Shield (Ebay pulls up some "EasyDriver" sheilds that look to do the trick)
NEMA 17 stepper? should be big enough?
limit switch for homing/calibrating

Here is an Arduino based stepper controller that I coded that has both a linear and rotary control. All the settings are set in a menu and you can use it to control multiple devices. No coding is required if you use the same screen shield I did.

http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com ... hp?t=25091

It would be cool to see somebody run with a linear project as the rotary table side of it has been well tested. I'd go with a nema 23 stepper, 48v power supply and a Gecko g251x controller and maybe a rack and pinion or belt drive as threaded rod would be quite slow to adjust. You'd need a 3 to 5 to 1 reduction drive on a rack.
Home positions can be set so you can return to the same spot.

Found this, exactly what i need!
Of course, I'll run a bigger drive and motor!

Finally!
I did it with an Arduino, LCD screen, keypad and of course stepper.

Programming was the worst, i had to rewrite 90% to make it work like i wanted, but now its working perfect!

I'll post pics or vids soon

Here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvjlxiVu8ts

-Goes to desired measurement
-When pressing the left and right arrow buttons, stopper moves 1/16 in desired direction
-keeps position in memory when turned off
-There is no reference to zero, instead, i cut a small piece of metal on the bandsaw,
measure it with a caliper, then enter the real stopper position.
-The motor turns on, moves, then turns off, so i can leave the machine on all day without worry.

I haven't installed limit switches yet, but i have put a maximum length input in the code
Unfortunately, it can't go faster without sometimes stalling

that's awesome.
well done.
I don't know why you'd really need it faster, but you could likely just put a larger stepper on it for that.
