Wall hanging plasma parts?

Post by davek0974 »

Whats everyone using to hang wall art and projects ?

Was thinking something like these with maybe a tack-weld in the hole?

I used to cut my own hangers, bend, and weld. I've since started using D rings similar to your photo. I use the larger version, with 2 holes. I weld them at the holes.

I use the small ones like that and just tack them on I was just tacking the hole but I had one not hold so I got paranoid and started adding a tack on the side of them.

I use saw blade toothed hanger like come on picture frames. They give me a little adjustability that the D ring doesn't and
I can get them for less than .01 each.

Which ones do you use? I used a few of those, but they were so thin it was a PITA to weld. Also, at the time I was using HR and welding hangers prior to dipping in acid. The sawtooths were high-zinc, and the acid ate them off. That's why I started cutting my own hangers (sawtooth included). Now that I use P&O, the acid bath isn't an issue. However, the bulk D-rings are still easier/cheaper than cutting hundreds of my own hangers, and I feel the customers like them better as well. BTW, I did acid test the D rings. The ones from Walmart dissolved, but the bulk 100 pack from amazon did fine.

If I could find a thicker/easier to weld, non-zinc sawtooth, I would definitely use them for some pieces.

I weld them after the acid bath. USUALLY today I forgot and polished 3 pieces before I noticed. I just welded them on and grabbed the grinder again. Just had to touch up where the metal discolored. They are thin but I just turn the welder down and go to it with 2 short burst per side.

I've ordered some D-Rings and also some little plates with holes in, see what they work like.

The saw-tooth ones would be best but the parts are just letters so the area i have to fit them is quite narrow - most of the tooth hangers seem to be 40mm wide or more, also as said very thin.

Will see how it works out.

I buy small sawtooth ones from the hardware store. It's about $2-$2.50 for 6 small ones. They are galvanized.
I have a little HF spot welder to get them on

D-Rings look ok, bugger to weld on but I think I have it now.

You can't weld through the hole - the metal vaporises before the pool gets a bite into the main part so i found it best to start a pool off to each side and then just flash onto the tab, feels pretty secure.

I found just the opposite. I start in the middle of the hole, and just hold the gun in place. I let the hole "fill up" with molten wire, until it just kind of melds with the hanger. If I try to work the gun in circles inside the hole, it just blows away the D-ring material. In other words, letting the molten metal rise to the hanger tab works great, but trying to put the arc near the hanger tab is pointless.

That works for the larger, 2-hole style D ring tabs I'm using. I also have some very small single ring tabs, but I haven't found away to keep from blowing through them yet. The strap material on those is even thinner than the dual hole version.

I weld 2" of rod on the back at the point where it will hang nicely. I use this stub to hold and manoeuvre the piece while coating it. I can then stand the stub in a tube welded onto a plate and the thing goes into the oven to cook. After it comes out and cools I cut the stub short, 1/2 inch. I can either put a cap on it that will allow it to hang on a ledge or leave the cap off and it goes into the wall just like a hanger nail.

Bigger pieces have an inch piece of bent rod stuck on with the same effect as a D ring.
