Copyright infringement
I've got a question concerning copyright infringement. I've been asked to do a design for a friend from a picture they took. It's from a well know company but I've drawn the design by hand from the picture so it's not detail for detail of the original. If I change the lettering and it's only for them to hang on their wall am I guilty of copyright infringement?

Re: Copyright infringement
If you are asking then chances are you already know the answer. That being said, if you are really making one, for a good friend, and you aren't "selling" it, but it's a gift, then I would seriously doubt they are going to send the legal team after you. BTW, chances are you are talking about trademark infringement not copyright, but it's just semantics at this point.
Things I wouldn't do.
Put it on social media, or the internet period.
Sell them.
Advertise it in any way shape form or fashion.
Share the file.
Make a habit of it.
Now, you should know there are probably going to be people get on here and tell you how terrible that is, and they would NEVER EVER EVER even in a million years do that, blah blah blah.
Two days later, the same people will post pictures of something with a ford logo in it, or chevy, or a realtree camo logo, or browning buckmark, or..........
You get the picture I'm sure. Cut it, if you take any money at all, make sure it's just that, folding money, no receipt, 007 secret handshake didn't get that from me kind of deal, and move on.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Copyright infringement
Just so everybody knows "BROWNING buckmark" IS available for ALL to reproduce! Just go to their website and you will find a contest for the best use of the buckmark. One of the few companies that I know to encourage the use of their LOGO.Shane Warnick wrote: Now, you should know there are probably going to be people get on here and tell you how terrible that is, and they would NEVER EVER EVER even in a million years do that, blah blah blah.

" The Browning Buckmark has been around since 1978, and since 2007 we've encouraged you to participate in the Show Us Your Buckmark contest, displaying your pride, creativity, and ingenuity as you create unique and amazing crafts in the form of the Buckmark logo. You've inspired us, and now we are returning the favor, showing you our own ideas on showing the Browning Buckmark. The 2015 Show Us Your Buckmark winners were recently chosen from the entries starting last January 1, 2015. The announcement will take place in a few days (sorry about the delay). "
Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Copyright infringement
Thanks Larry for the info about Browning. I think we'll all agree that this freedom of use of a well recognized logo for your own profit is super rare. less than 1 in a thousand companies are likely in the same camp as Browning.

Speaking of the browning Buckmark logo.... I encourage you all to enter their contest with cool stuff. I won one of their contests once with a deck railing with their Buckmark logo about 6 years ago!
I got a free 2500.00 Citori shotgun out of the deal!

Re: Copyright infringement
Do not confuse Browning's allowed use of their trademark in their "Show Me Your Buckmark" contest as permission for unlimited use of their trademark. Like any large company they are highly protective of their trademark and have restrictions on it's use. You would be wise to contact their legal department if you are interested in selling items with the Buckmark logo. Commercial use of their logo without written approval or licensing is prohibited. You can contact their licensing department at Browning, Licensing Department, One Browning Place, Morgan, Utah 84050. 801-876-2711 for more information.

Re: Copyright infringement
Wait, first it was a copyright, now it's a patent?? Either way the art applied to a geodesic sphere just can't hold up in any court. Its like getting a patent for applying peanut butter to one side of a slice of bread.
I'm not making them as I'm not a fan of the shape. I also don't make business logos for anyone other than myself. As far as patents go, figure out a way to make it better and you just trumped the patent. For instance put jelly on top of the peanut butter and the patent for peanut butter on slice of bread is worthless.
