TruCut CNC TITAN is ALIVE :)

Post by cindy carlisle »

The Titan was developed as a true industrial workhorse. Every part and component was carefully selected and tested to provide long component life under harsh, high duty cycle use. Longer life cycle on common wear items means less down time, less routing maintenance and higher profit margins.

The Titan was designed specifically for use with High Definition plasma. The Victor XT control is a robust industrial control designed and shielded for use with high frequency equipment. Other machines in this price category use controls built using standard PC components and do not fair well in an environment where high frequency exists. Issues can range from failed jobs to physically damaged electronics. The Victor XT control is designed with the proper shielding and ground backplanes to prevent high frequency noise interference.

The Titan is a rail system. The long axis rail is attached to floor and the cutting table is independent of the motion platform. This configuration lowers your initial acquisition costs by allowing you to build the cutting table on-site. Not only does this offer considerable cist savings on the cutting table but also on shipping costs. We've found that when table sizes exceed 8 x 20, it is far more cost effective to build them on-site. Of course, we can provide the cutting table for those who would rather purchase one.

The Titan is available in 10' and 16' widths and lengths in 20' increments with no limitations. A 10' x 20' system will yield an 8' x 16' cutting area with room to park multiple stations. The 16' gantry is designed for a 12' cutting area with parking space for even more cutting stations. For pricing information, see our Titan Build Page.

When choosing a plasma power supply, scalability, we looked at cut quality, manufacturer support and cost of operation. The Thermal Dynamics Auto-Cut and Ultra-Cut came out on top.

Scalability - The Ultra-Cut XT machines are scalable simply by adding additional inverter banks. You can buy a 200A machine now and upgrade it to a 400A machine down the road. This ability saves a considerable amount of money over replacing the entire system.

Cut Quality - It is no secret in the industry that Thermal Dynamics Ultra-Cut machines offer superior cut quality on aluminum and stainless. Why you ask? The Ultra-Cut machines use a Nitrogen/water mist process. Competitors use Nitrogen/H35. H35 (Argon/Hydrogen)is an expensive gas. Nitrogen is used as a plasma gas and water mist is used a shield. The heat from the plasma breaks down the water to it's principal components, oxygen and hydrogen. This process helps to cool the material while the oxygen helps to promote the cut and the hydrogen acts as a shield.

Mild steel is no problem either. The Auto-Cut and Ultra-Cut machines will increase your production volume using the inexpensive Oxygen/Air process while producing a smooth, dross free edge.

Manufacturer Support - Victor is always there to help when help is needed. Phone support is second to none and technicians are always available to go on site if needed.

Operating Costs - What's the point in a low acquisition cost it the operating costs are high? The Auto-Cut and Ultra-Cut machine deliver. The 300A and 400A machines use HeavyCut consumables providing longer consumable life at higher power settings. The Nitrogen/Water process also offers considerable savings over Nitrogen/H35.

We chose the Victor XT control for it's seamless integration into a high definition cutting system as well as it's ease of use. The XT control offers advanced features such as...

On board automatic nesting
On board Micro-CAD software
Extensive shape library
Control of up to 2 plasma stations and 4 oxy/fuel stations
Automatic power supply control using electronic profile charts
Integrated AC servo drives

not trying to sell it, just to inform. We have customers who have bought an entry level.........who read this for recreation purposes, who have been asking about it :) Thank you for you thoughts about the limitations of the level of people in or who read this forum.....but I beg to differ :)

Just a correction....where water mist secondary is used (on the Victor systems) the "competitor" Hypertherm does not use Nitrogen and H35. F5, which is a standard laser gas combination of 95% nitrogen and 5% hydrogen is used to produce extremely square edges on stainless that are 100% weldable....and without the staining effects of water on the material and machine. You can get these systems from TruCut as well.

Hypertherm is also used on our TruCut CNC .......but this TruCut is running a Victor Ultra-Cut 200 XP.
Hopefully we will be making Hypertherm Water Jet Tables next yr :)

Cindy, how big is that hole and what thickness metal?

I've always found it interesting how well various manufacturers can do what. It seems there are a a handful of manufacturers very competitive and making quality product, but some manufacturers have certain features others do not have.

Thanks for the correction Jim. I wasn't aware of that. Just out of curiosity, do you know how H35 compares to F5 in price. I know that H35 is pricey, which is the other option Victor offers for cutting non-ferrous. The only issue I've seen with water is not with the nitrogen/water process but with other processes after switching from nitrogen water. If the system isn't 100% purged, the 02/Air consumables don't last long.

We hope to be setting up an HPR soon. If you ever find your way down south, we'd love to show you around the shop.

That hole is 1.75" in 1/4" HR Steel. The holes were optimized using the Diameter Pro software built into the Victor control.

I'm curious about where it says "precision roller chain" for X and Y drives. I haven't seen any chain drives used for plasma and didn't notice any details or pics of it on the website but did see a closeup of helical rack and pinion. Do you have any pics of how the chain drive is set up?

The TITAN DOESN'T use chain , it uses extremely expensive rack.

The TruCut Series One, is our introductory table and gantry.
We have had many repeat customers , they usually upgrade to a bigger table or plasm..........sometimes both, or the just want a second machine :)

We run chain because it is basically maintenance free. It's been used on all sorts of machinery for many years. It is typically run dry on motorcycles with little maintenance. We do a lot of machine maintenance for local industrial clients and one of the more common requests is rack and pinion replacement. On larger machines that can cost upwards of $100/foot. The amount of wear will depend on how much it gets used and often the machine is cleaned. Look at it this way....You have a steel rack meshed with a steel pinion engaged with compressed air with no lubrication. Throw some plasma dust on the rack and you're looking at about a 2 year rack life on a table....not to mention the noise they make when they get some wear on them.

Roller chain is designed to run in harsh environments with little to no maintenance. Accuracy and repeatability is the same and offers zero backlash. Resolution is determined by pinion sprocket diameter. The only thing that will change that is a change in the pinion diameter....no different than R&P. That chain we use is designed with an 1100lb working load. Used the way we use it, is only exposed to less than 10% of that, which means it never stretches. We have machines that have been running for 10 years with the original chain. It just never wears.

We've been in this business for about 15 years and have built machines using ball screw, lead screw, R&P, linear servo and roller chain. Roller chain is by far the most economical from a purchase price and maintenance perspective. Ball screw with a driven nut would be 2nd choice. Linear servo is very cool, but VERY expensive. Most or the $500K+ fiber laser machines are now using linear servos.

Gantry overrun can occur if the motors are undersized and/or machine acceleration is set too high. A properly designed machine will not overrun because the designer would have...or should have...taken things like gantry weight and primary and secondary drive reductions into consideration when designing the machine. A Koike Mastergraph gantry weighs around 3000 pounds and it stops on a dime. The smaller hobby machines use aluminum so they can get away with smaller motors and drives, which cost less.

We actually prefer the separate approach to CAD and CAM. We have much more control over the process that way.
