Which 3M VHB/UHB do I want for layering?

Post by motoguy »

Curious which 3m VHB or UHB tape you guys are using for layering signs? Ran across this site which has brief listing:

https://jvconverting.com/very-high-bond ... uhb-tapes/

And of course the 3M site lists all products:

http://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/a ... 7497&rt=r3

However, I'm overwhelmed. Which tape do you guys use for bonding bare, painted, or powdered materials? If you've tried different types, why do you use the particular one you're using now? What thickness do you use it on? I'd say I'm looking for something to use on bare, painted, or powdered 18-14ga steel, or maybe thicker on AL.

Also, I ran across a site discussing the fact that the VHB/UHB tapes have a shelf life of ~2 years. After that, the adhesive starts breaking down. Apparently they last much longer than that IN USE, but while sitting on the shelf, not so much. Interesting to know.

I have several rolls of 5952 VHB, I have some others but not sure the all the numbers. The 5952 is my go to for everything, even used this to attach my gear racks to my aluminum rail for my drives. I just hung a bunch of diamond plate aluminum sheets on counters with it and rock solid.
