price with tax = an even number

Post by mwade123 »

Does anyone have a spread sheet or something that shows how much something is then when you add tax it equals an even number.

like

----------- $9.44 +
06% tax . $.56 =
----------- $10

It's not perfect, but for 6% sales tax, I take the whole number (price you want to sell it for) and mult by 0.9435. This gives me my price before tax.

Examples:
$25 x .9435 = $23.5875 x 1.06 = $25.00275
$10 x .9435 = $9.435 x 1.06 = $10.0011
$50 x .9435 = 47.175 x 1.06 = $50.0055

Get's me within a few cents (rounding).

Divide the final (wanted) price by 1.06

5.00 divided by 1.06 = 4.72

Were you wanting to add tax to your price and come up with a number rounded up to the nearest dollar? If you use Excel, you can have the value of A times B equals C, where the value in C has a formula to round up to whole numbers. Is that what you're looking for? Bob.

I picked up an app for my phone (droid) that does this for me. I put in the desired amount and it figures it out. 8-)

In Excel, place value 2.25 in A1, and 0.76 in A2. In A3 enter formula =ROUNDUP((+A1+A2),0)
The value in A3 will be A1 plus A2, rounded up to zero decimal places, example 4.00, not 3.01.

Why fret about calculating taxes per item?

Add it to your asking price, round that up to the nearest even-number and put a 'tax included' sign somewhere noticeable.
Total your sales and figure the amount of the total taxes due for the day/event/tax period.

Just be sure to stash that amount away in a special account for tax day.

Check out %GP and %Margin Calculator app, too. It's pretty cool. And, thanks for the Tax Calculator app!
