I'm fairly new to the plasma cutting world and this site has been tremendously helpful. I just wanted to thank those of you that took the time to share. This is a topic that my students and I have discussed on numerous occasions, the value of work and how you charge for your product. I try to give them the most accurate "Real World" view/scenarios possible and threads like this one help to make that possible. Thanks again.

thanks for all your advice and input on the pricing, it has helped me a lot. I do have a question. I ran this part through my TM driver and came up with 1.02 mins. x 60 gave 61.2 inches. punched that into the spreadsheet and came out to $17.87 (3/16" mat) question is this part doesn't look to have 60 inches of cutting on it? I had a couple tabs the same way. any ideas?

I get about 27 1/2" when you add them all up. Not sure how you got 60". Could be it added in all the moves to cut it as well?

Based on the information above it looks like you are figuring cut inches based on the amount of cut time. It is unlikely you will get an accurate measurement that way. I use PlasmaCam and DesignEdge and they both calculate the actual # of inches cut.

After you determined the amount to charge the customer, what discount do you give to that customer should they order 30 additional pieces?

I go by whatever it says on the spreadsheet

Example: 681 linear inches of cut (X) .019 = $12.94

So in the end if the Project was 592 square inches = 592 (x) .019 = $11.25

Add the two = $12.94 + $11.25 = $24.19

I dont understand how the linear inches of cut corelates to the price per square inch and why you would multiply them??? as in your formula-- 681 linear inches of cut (X) .019 = $12.94 then add your square inch price to it??? am I missing something???

Here at the shop we have been doing the Large and Small plasma thing for a long time. At first we tracked everything as a costing item.

It was a complicated process at best to caluclate all the variables with ALL the different materials, thinkness,etc.

over the years we worked to create an effective costing process that works over the largest possible range of variables.

The only one that made sense and actually works very well was the Machine Time Based Calculations. The Small machine is billed at $100 per hour. All of the variables that made the other methods clunky are auto accounted for in MTBC. The thicker the material the slower the feedrate the longer the machine time the MORE it cost. Same with consumables. SURE more pierces eats more electrodes BUT it also automatically takes longer so the cost factor is still built in.

When you get some time take a look at MTBC (Machine time calulations) It has sure made costing a simple process. In SheetCam you get a report that give all of the needed info. The factor we use is total machine time and Material area TIMES cost.

ALSO note the Barcoded FILENAME that really saves time for the cut crew as all they have to do is scan the barcode and it loads into the machine ready to cut.

This worksheet is not my final billing thing, I use Sage 50 pro accounting 2013 edition for quotes, invoices, inventory and such. I just use this as a quick (for me only) tool. It does not include peirces which I will include on the Sage invoice. I can use this just to get a quick Idea what stuff will cost and as a paper copy of what work needs to be done. I usually print off a blank copy with the customer info and hand write jobs that are requested then go back to fill in the appropriate info later. then print again just as an on the floor tool for reference. Of course I changed my formulas on this sheet for posting here. Hrly rate can be changed aswell as cut pricing or whatever else you like to use for #'s according to what your rates are. Anyway I just thought I would share.

Try FILE > PROPERTIES > GENERAL tab and then uncheck the READ ONLY box.

Not an option on mine. I should have mentioned that I'm having to use "openoffice.org" to open the spreadsheet. I don't have excel

I can re-save in excel as an earlier version of the spreadsheet and then re-post. What format will openoffice support, ie .xlsx?
