LED back lighting and affordable sources

Post by LemcoIronWorks »

I have seen many folks using LED RGB strips for backlighting with wall standoffs, I really like this effect but I would like advise on brand/source/price etc.

Anyone seen a good source with a solar kit? I'm thinking of getting some landscaping lights (The ones on stakes that you put along a walkway) or maybe some of the ones at Harbor Freight/Northern and then disassemble and include in some small signs like a home address sign on the mail box or on a fence where I don't have power.

FYI... i order 2 kits: 1M of rgb lights, controller, remote and power supply on jan 12th
they arrived today jan 25, 13 days shipping from china
not bad considering it takes 2 weeks to get anything off ebay in the states

the 1M kits i ordered were not waterproof and cost $8.18 shipped per
the waterproof set with the same kit is $7.95 shipped per
go figure

What do you guys use for outdoor LEDs? The ones above are "waterproof", but I'm curious how they last. Also, the 4 pin connector to the power supply isn't water proof in any fashion. Do you run an extension through a wall, build a box/store the power supply behind the sign (if the design allows), or ?

I've got an outdoor, backlit, light-box style product I'd like to get out...but I'm wondering what LEDs to use for actual outdoor exposure. These will be mounted out on boat docks, exposed to everything.
