Laser crosshair

Post by woodworker2001 »

Designed this for a laser crosshair for the table at the school I teach at. 3D printed and bought the two 5v line lasers from eBay. Haven't had a chance to get it wired to see how it works but clams up nice and seems like it will work.

How are you going to deal with the smoke and spatter of piercing?

We shall see how it holds up to the sparks.
I appreciate the info on wiring. I am not running Mach 3 though. I just wired it to an old phone charger that puts out 5v. I have run it a couple times and seems like it should be ok.

I don't know it there still available but we used a battery operated laser cross hair unit from Sears.
They were made for Sears drill presses , we fabricated a nylon bushing as the Sears unit had a slightly larger inside diameter then outside diameter of the plasma torch. 1.375"
It works great as the unit has its own clamp to choke it to the torch barrel. very easy on and off.
We simply cut lens covers from clear safety lens used in welding helmets to protect the laser, and attached with double sided tape.
The unit cost around 35 bucks from Sears. With the cross hairs powered up, a test pierce in 10 ga carbon was dead on as far as plasma accuracy would allow.
