v rail idea on thr cheap side

Post by HammerDownJustin »

Okay just thinking which isn't always a good thing. Have seen some setups where tables had flat bar stock mounted horizontally where the v groove bearing rode on top. Now it will wear down because it isn't hardened. Okay instead of buying flat bar. If you were to cut it from plate on the table then technically the tail would be hardened on the edge wouldn't it? Then the bearing might not wear it down.

I don't like the looks of v-rollers on flat bar, but you could just flame harden the edge, if you plasma cut it the edge won't be square, ideally the edge would need a small bevel the same angle as the v-roller

for unbeveled flat bar I'd go with something like this

Yep I have been looking at that stuff. I have some aluminum rails and now read up where they wont hold up to my v bearings. Thought about making a jig in my mill and trying to bevel some 1/4" flat bar. Would be hard to get it all even though.
