Dirt in clearcoat

Post by little blue choo »

I have been having a lot of problems with dust and dirt in my clear coat. I am using a high gloss auto clear coat and really shows any thing that settles on it. Just wondering what everyone else is doing. I really don't want to build a small paint booth but may have to if this keeps up.

Thanks

Paint booth / room is really your best option.

One thing that may help is to water everything down around where you are spraying first, that helps keep the dust to a miinimum....but a booth is going to be the only true solution.

Hey rick, I was looking at your post and figured I would ask what you ended up doing to solve this problem. Having a metal fab shop and trying to have a good quality finish on metals is not working out for me. I'm thinking about taking the to a 3rd party to paint. Thank you

That's what I do. When I need stuff cleared, I take it to a friend's body shop and they clearcoat it. And in return we cut things for them. A good marriage.

I changed several things and no longer have a problem.
1. I started using a fast drying clear coat. Tacts off in 5 minutes
2. I started hanging my pieces instead of laying them flat. Have to be careful not to spray too heavy and cause runs but it's harder for dust to settle on it.
3. I blow down the area I'm painting in a few minutes before I paint.
4. I use a tac cloth on piece before painting.
5. I blow the piece off with paint gun just before I spray.
On the rare occasion that I get some dirt that I can't live with in a piece I wait an hour or so, wet sand it and shoot another coat on.

Really good info! Thanks for the advise. I'll start doing this prep and hopefully it will take care of the issue.
