Airbrush Paint on bright metal

Post by Bobcat320 »

For those of you who do airbrushing, what is the best airbrush paint to buy that can be applied on bright sanded metal? I am trying to get the same effect that I do with the Duplicolor Anodized spray can paints, but in finer detail and on smaller pieces.
Any guidance is most appreciated!

I just use Tester hobby and other enamel paints. Automotive 2-part paints and others you MUST wear a respirator mask instead of as face filter mask. I built a 7'x9' paint booth with vent hood and blower to outdoors in my basement. It's all sealed and is where I paint all my work. ZERO smell in the house. Summer and winter but in winter in need to dial down the exhaust blower speed a bit so as not to downdraft the gas furnace and gas water heater flues.

I use the anodized all the time. I don't know anything about airbrushing, does the paint need to be thinner? Or is it a whole different setup? I have been looking for a more affordable option that the anodized airbrush or spray gun.

I use Wicked transparent air brush colors right out of the bottle and then clear coat. I also use F/X dyes and clear coat them. The picture I'm attaching was done with F/X dyes, Cherry Red and Bright Blue and then cleared with dupliColor high gloss in a rattle can. Looks great, even better when I use automotive clear with activator.

I think that looks great. Well, except the Ford part. :)

I use the steel dye from Steel FX. I love the richness of the color, and the fact that it dries very fast and I can powder coat over it in 15 minutes! This was done with cherry red and cobalt blue dye and gloss clear powder coat

Here is a Marlin fish cutout wall hanging about 4ft x 2ft that I air brushed but no clear on it yet. All painted using Krylon bottle enamels and was first coated in white powdercoat. Is intended to hang on a wall outdoors. Recently sold it for $125.
