2 or more Colors

Post by grindergary »

I would like to know how you do a project with 2 colors? I see these beautiful signs guys make and they have different colors in them. I'm a newbie at painting.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

I used to do a lot of masking/rattle canning but since I've started airbrushing Bill Worden's dyes, I seldom do any masking anymore. It's still a guessing game getting the different shades because after it's clearcoated, the colors are much richer. When I need a defined line I hold a small piece of stiff paper next to the color I want to paint against...saves masking. For me, airbrushing really simplifies things.

For some it is more than one layer of metal as well. painted separately and put together later.

Thanks for the responses. Truly appreciated.

I guess I will see about getting an inexpensive airbrush and try it out.

Thanks

Gary,

Before you buy an airbrush, you may want to ask Bill Worden what to buy. I think an Iwata is what he recommends because some of the others may have internal components that will deteriorate over time. That's what my next one is going to be.

David What are you using to attach the metal to each other.

Most of the time if it is just a decorative piece, I would just rough the surface and use a epoxy sort of glue, or a silicone for that matter.

If it has some mass to it, I plan and put holes into the bottom layers that I can then weld a stud onto the top layer and put a nut on the back of them and tighten them all together.

Another option, that still includes masking would be to drill holes in top layers, weld them shut to bottom layers, grind/sand, and then mask off and paint.

Harbor freight has an air brush that has great performance for its price. this is great for the beginner or the experimenter like me. if u gum It up u are only out 14 - 20 $. they have a throttle, so u can start a stream of air before u pull back to start the paint. there is also what looks like an air brush but it is called an air eraser(also from harbor freight) and it is a miniature sand blaster, and it works great for etching, fixing a mess up or roughing for paint( make sure u are using dry air or the abrasive tends to clot in the gun ).
I have been able to do some crazy things with very little cost and been inspired with new ideas and methods. i am not a pro when it comes to air brushing so strongly consider the advise of those with more experience; but i have had some higher grade air brushes in the past and they have been very temperamental compared to the harbor freight's higher grade and i prefer the harbor freight air brush.
i hate to promote the china made product but in this case i think that there are larger issues with the country's economy than a few 14$ air brushes. not to mention that there is no more industry left in the bounds of the u.s. and many of us are just trying to survive under the regime of a tyrannical administration and its affordable healthcare act ( what a joke without a funny punch line).
sorry i got lost on a rant... the HB airbrushes are great :) to learn and experiment on, give it a try as well as the air eraser.
