Gluing powder coat metal pieces

Post by ILOVEYOURBACKPACK »

Hi guys,

I need to glue two pieces of powder-coated sheet metal together. The back plate will go behind the main sign sheet. My customer does not want any screws or bolts so I need to figure out a way to glue.

I use Duck brand double sided tape. Works great but if it's super heavy or will be exposed to moisture, I use the Loctite brand of double sided tape. Much more expensive though.

I use Loctite G02 glue. Can get It at Menards. Works really well and is very clear when dried.

Locktite says GO2 is not recommended for powder coated surfaces. I use the 3M VHB tape. I have several very heavy signs hanging outside with it and they have done well for years.

Several years ago I was doing my first multi layer sign and of course it many small pieces because I didn't know what I was doing when designing it. Some of the pieces really didn't have enough space for enough VHB tape, I had previously found that one needed to be careful not to over load it. So I embarked on a small scale science experiment using all of the available adhesives from my shop and a couple others locally. What I found was that 3M 5200 adhesive caulk had the best stick of anything. In every destructive test I did It never had an adhesive (peeled off of substrate) failure. One word of caution is do not use IPA (rubbing alcohol) or denatured alcohol to clean the parts as it has some effect on the curing of 5200. I used acetone with a Scotch Bright pad to clean the parts first. This does take 24 hours plus to cure before handling. We never use this stuff at the boat yard if we think that we may ever need to take the joint apart again.

Just tried Gorilla double sided mounting tape rated at 15 lbs. Works great.

VHB Tape is good stuff! But i have also been using the GO2 for many projects and work great. Loctite does not say that you cant use it on powder coat, however it does say to test with the materials you are using to make sure it is compatible. Might not be the best rout for everyone, but it has proven to do the job for me!

Here is the technical data sheet for GO2 for anyone who is interested!

Jason I was just quoting what they directed me too on their web site. I'm sure it will work with some paints and some powders but when they say not recommended with out testing I'm not going to take the chance on a problem. As I was told it may work with one powder but not with another one. You will need to test the different powders you use. Too much time and trouble for me. Below is what they directed me to.

Not Recommended For
Use on polypropylene (PP)
Mirrors whose reflection and protective coating do not comply with DIN 1238 5.1 and DIN EN 1036
Use on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) (Teflon™)
Use on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
Coatings such as paints, varnishes, and powder coatings with out carrying out pre-application testing to ensure compatibility
Use on polyethylene (PE)
Use on rigid polystyrene
Applications where at least one surface is not porous
Non-ferrous metals such as copper, bronze, and brass with out carrying out pre-application testing to ensure compatibility

I use a product called crystal clear stixall. It comes in a silicone type tube. It works great. Tec 7 also have a similar type product. It dries overnight and any little excess is easily removed with a rag and wd 40 as long as you do it within 24 hours.
