Post by redheadfred »

I built a 4x4x6 oven , got pids and ssrs to control the heat . They work but once they get to set temp it starts heating up alot more and the ssrs get smoking hot .

You should use the SSR's for the control circuit of contactors (larger relays) as the SSR contacts are not rated for the current needed to operate most heating elements.

I'm assuming that the SSR's you have are rated for the current you're putting thru them. You have to mount SSR's on pretty good sized heat sinks to dissipate the heat generated by them. If you have them heat sinked and they still are not opening the circuit to the heating coils, them perhaps they are not wired to the PID correctly. Make sure they are wired correctly, and if they are, try opening the SSR control circuit from the PID and see if they open the heating circuit.

I have an SSR running the control circuit of a propane heater for my large oven and am in the process of building a smaller (4'x3'x8') oven that will be electric and will use the SSR to control an electric heat sequencer (24v control circuit that will bring my 3 strips on in stages). My background is 20 years as an HVAC contractor.

I use a seperate SSR for each of my elements and have not had a problem with any of my 4 SSRs or elements. Each SSR is mounted close to the element
pan (externally of course).
