Rust finish and clearcoat

Post by msc »

I am working on a 8' x 6' ranch type entry sign for a property in Georgia. Most of it will be powder coated but there is a life size dog and a couple smaller items made of 11 gauge hot rolled steel that the client wants rusted. I was thinking about rusting and then auto clearcoat. Now I am wondering if the clearcoat will really stick to the rust. This is my largest and to date most expensive project and I do not want it to continue rusting or flaking off.

My other option is try to paint a rusty look but I would rather not try that.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks, Mark

You could look into using Corten on those parts. It only creates a rust coating and then stops. Google search. Not sure of availability or price.
Otherwise I wouldn't clear coat just attach and let them weather as is. They won't really create flaky rust. I do yard sculptures that have been outside for years and don't have flake rust on them.

You might also look into SteelFX, I think they have a rust color dye that may work. Then you can clear over that. Personally I would use Corten.

Rick,
I "think" Prismatic Powders has it. A few weeks ago I was looking at a number of powder suppliers when I ran across it. I'll look and see if I can find it again.

I checked several powder websites and they all had "rust" powders.

I went to the powder coater today and I am going with a rust colored power coat, which turns out is the exact color of the dog. The customer loves the color so all is good.

Thanks for all the input.
