Steel FX question

Post by stevewrobins »

Good Afternoon guys,

I am using steel FX and then putting a clear on with really good results but was asked about selling pieces without the clear. Does anyone know how well the finish holds up with the clear to protect it?
Thanks Guys

Patinas and dyes must be clear coated because they rub off easily and your metal will tend to rust with time. I use a 90 minute fast cure, high gloss automotive clear. If I don't want the gloss I use a satin finish clear.

Perhaps you could use a satin or flat clear to protect it?

Steve when I'm not wanting the gloss finish I just pick up some satin finish clear in a rattle can. Have used the Dupli Color satin clear several times with good success.

I have always used high gloss powder coat over the dyes from Steel FX. Would it also work to use a matte clear? Would the colors 'pop' like they do with high gloss?

The higher the gloss the more the colors pop. The flatter the shine the duller the colors will look. In my experience it has always been the more FLASH the more CASH! Just my opinion.

I use flat, matte, and satin depending on the application. A lot of my finished products are distressed or rustic so a high gloss just doesn't go well with the overall design. I personally like the Rust Oleum brand of clear and they have all the different finishes.
