First attempt

Post by jsd010 »

This was my first attempt with a piece. Copper F/X with Torch F/X on the stars. Covered it with Lacquer.

Any suggestions to make it better? I had students use an 80 grit wheel to polish it up after taking it out of the muriatic acid.

Looks good but 80 grit? Shouldn't have used something finer, like 120? Less pronounced scratches. When I pull stuff out of the muriatic, a few passes with 120 grit, lightly, and it almost looks like stainless.

Josh,

The shinier the steel, the shinier the Copper will be. In finishing or painting, the quality of the end-result is
99% prep & 1% chemistry.

The Copper F/X should be in contact with the steel surface no more than a few seconds.
And, for best results, work in the shade so the chemical/s don't start to dry on the surface of the
steel before you hit it with water to neutralize.

Looks okay for a first time, though...

I always use an 80 grit flap wheel to clean and swirl the steel.
