Importing to Inkscape can be tricky at the best of times.
It's a combination of a number of things. Occasionally it's borderline impossible.
Things to consider are:
Correct scaling remembering your default size unit on Inkscape is in pixels.
Whether or not the dxf is properly closed path
Using a line colour or fill colour once imported
Occasionally the use of select all or CTRL+A will select the seemingly non existent Graphic.
Finally whether under the fill and stroke options you have a sub path create a hole or remain filled unless reversed.
Hopefully this will get you headed down the right track.
