I'm new to Inkscape, but I inadvertently learnt a handy trick that I've not seen mentioned elsewhere.
Making a 'montage' of various bits of text and silhouettes for plasma cutting signs, it's a pain getting everything in the right format to generate a vector output, involving merging images joining etc. and sorting out overlaps and holding tabs.
What I now do is make my assembly of bits from all sorts of sources and formats so that 'it looks right on the screen', then I save a .PNG image of the view I want. Then open a new file, import the .PNG image and use the 'trace outline' to vectorise the entire thing at one go. Save as an SVG and it's good to go straight into Sheetcam.
This second one has too much detail to cut at my resolution, just me mucking about
