Quickie for Inkscape

Post by acourtjester »

Here is a quickie for you on Inkscape
Do a screen shot (.jpeg) of the image you want to convert.
Run Inkscape and import the image make it the size you want.
Click on Path and click on trace Bitmap this opens a menu for the trace.
Using the Brightness cutoff click on update if the image is not right
Change the threshold up/down and keep clicking on update until you
Get the image to look OK When you do click on OK now move the image
To ID the trace image (it will be a black image over the original) and
delete the original now click on the traced Image This will access the
fill and stoke in the lower left and click on it.
This will bring up the fill and stroke menu in the upper right. When the
fill tab is shown click on the X below it. This make the image disappear now
click on the stroke paint tab and click on the box next to the X this will
show the image trace outline. You can change the outline thickness by
clicking on the stroke style and change the width value not really needed.
You can now save it as DFX or SVG for SheetCam.

Now if you want to eliminate some of the drawing elements you would click
On path then Break apart then under object click on ungroup you can now
move around the image and click on what you want to eliminate and hit the
delete key Sometime it is easier if you enlarge the image (hit the + key)
save it when you are finished.

Do you know of a way for Inkscape to take a line within an image and convert it to a single-line path as oppose to tracing around the line?

OK Thanks. I couldn't find a way, either, but it was worth a shot.

Thanks! Going to try this since most of my Inkscape attempts so far have been futile!

So I found a nice black/white image and tried exactly what you said. And I could use some help.

When doing the trace I see double lines, what's the best way to remove these?
And the trace looks good, but then I save it as a dxf and import it to my torchmate it will import like this. Not sure why?

Gamble,

Are you using SheetCAM for your CAM G-Code Application? If so, then just open the .svg files with SheetCAM and forget about converting the file to DXF.

Cannot comment of about Torchmate as I have never used it.
I have also used SheetCam to remove the second set of line by using the contour tool and high light the lines you don't want and making them a different layer and un-clicking that layer so you can tell which lines you remove. Then when planning the operations leave that layer out so you don't cut it. Don't know if you can do things like that in Torchmate.

Did I do the conversion wrong that it imports all the solid red parts or maybe that's just torchmate? I will attach the conversion file I did and see if you guys get the same results with sheetcam

Taking that jpeg that you posted, this is what I came up with tracing in Inkscape. It's still needs work, but I didn't spend too much time on it, either. I think the reason you are getting the results that you see is that the original is not very sharp. Maybe it was very small before you got it and it was enlarged. The lines have many open spots.

Using a screen shot of the original and changing the contrast this is as good as I can get it. With a better jpeg I could do better still it looks rustic :D Some more node manipulation would make it smoother.

Wow that's terrible. I thought the image was pretty good to start from. I did a quick trace with corel which I've never done before and it came out surprisingly well.
